REVIEW: The Snowman

Rating: 4 out of 5.

A magical Christmas classic that the children adore and the adults can enjoy a strong nostalgia hit.

The Snowman is a beloved UK Christmas classic based on the picture book by Raymond Briggs and Dianne Jackson’s film. A magical stage adaption has hit the stage at the Peacock Theatre for it’s 25th year transporting audiences to a wintery wonderland of a boy and a snowman who comes to life.

The Snowman is directed by Bill Alexander and features music and lyrics by Howard Blake, including the song ‘Walking in the Air’, spectacular design by Ruari Murchison, magical lighting by Tim Mitchell, and amazing choreography by Robert North, all of which is accompanied by a live orchestra.

With talented cast and wonderful stage scenery it kept my little cousins (6 and 8) completely engaged throughout. As an adult there were quite a few instances where I felt certain scenes dragged on and lost the story (opting for laughs from the audience as opposed to story progression). However it can’t be denied that The Snowman is designed for children not adults and thus the fact the children loved it means it was a great experience for all involved – as they’re the important opinion holders in this instance. It got us in the festive mood and the nostalgia hit was hugely enjoyable. A classic Christmas day out and one I’d recommend to all families.
