Why Am I So Single offers a fresh take on the trials of modern love

In the heart of London’s vibrant theatre scene, a new musical is making waves even before its official debut. Why Am I So Single is the latest brainchild of Lucy Moss and Toby Marlow, the dynamic duo behind the sensational hit Six. Today at Underbelly Boulevard, the duo unveiled this project as a semi-autobiographical exploration of two close friends, both musical playwrights, navigating the tumultuous waters of modern dating and sharing their woes and mishaps. Moss and Marlow performed the poignant title track, Why Am I So Single, setting the tone for love, friendship and warmness. Jo Foster, one of the leads, uplifted spirits with an energetic number, while Leesa Tulley delivered a more sombre, emotionally charged performance, waiting for her unrequited love. These performances enable us to peek into the diverse musical palette of the show. Jo Foster’s exceptional vocal performance was a highlight, showcasing a talent that has graced the stage in & Juliet. Leesa Tulley, starred in Six UK Tour, manoeuvred delicate emotions in the song and showed promise.

The Q&A session begins with a daring question about the duo’s worst dating experience. Marlow humorously took on a disastrous fictional dating spree of eight dates in a single day. Lucy hinted at changes since the workshop production at Sadler’s Wells in 2023, promising an evolved production that aims to resonate even more deeply with audiences. Despite the seemingly familiar theme of dating woes, the musical promises a fresh perspective, perhaps a reflection of the creators’ unique insights into the complexities of love in the age of dating apps and social media, as well as love’s unchanging eternity regardless of time. The event completes with a series of engaging activities, such as tarot reading, instax photo shooting and live illustrating. Tarot reading seems especially apt as it has become part of our dating culture. We all know it is not science, but who would ever ask for advice from science in the quest of love?

Why Am I So Single prepares to open its doors to the public at Garrick Theatre from 27th August 2024. Will it stand as a testament to the enduring appeal of musical theatre to delve into the heart of contemporary issue? Marlow and Moss said today: “We hope they text someone the second they leave the theatre saying ‘omigosh just fyi I love you soooo much!’” I do anticipate this show to be a tribute to love per se, with its such good quality of music and performance. In a world constantly seeking connection, Moss and Marlow’s latest venture invites us to laugh, cry, and perhaps find solace in the shared absurdities of seeking love in our modern age.
