It’s wild, fun, silly and touching: a great example of drag culture
The best thing I can say is this show doesn’t cut corners on either the Shrek or the burlesque parts. If you want powerful, sultry and graceful dances without Smash Mouth playing over the top, go somewhere else. If you want a comedy about Shrek without one of the characters stripping by the end of the scene, into a melodramatic and camp song – go somewhere else.
If you were curious enough to start reading a review about a Shrek themed burlesque show – the show is everything you want and will keep you laughing, cheering, jeering and in awe for almost every minute.
The dances are impressive, moving and camp as possible, Shrek pirouetting to “I need a hero” will stay with you longer than I’d care to admit. The jokes are all on that fine line of eye rolling bad jokes you can’t help laughing at, and the costuming is all consistent to the Shrek characters as well as working surprisingly well for a strip tease.
The man in the mirror has the highlight with an extraordinary costume of mirrored panels that dazzle and shine as they reflect the light during his dance, truling shining in their solo dance.
The show even includes a parody based off the infamous “Shrek is love, Shrek is life” viral video which is absurdly well done, like most of its jokes, it comes off so well because they commit to every aspect, no matter how silly, camp or Shrek it is.
The show also acts as a good entry point to burlesque, the Shrek themeing works to break the tension instantly letting you laugh and then cheer on each dancer. Watching so many people shed their apprehension as soon as the first song started just told me how exhilarating it was going to be, and it was.
The show won’t change your life, but it will move you, more than you think Shrek stripping or inflatable piggies could do. It eases you into what’s great about burlesque, the freedom, the celebration of sexuality and people in all shapes and sizes in this liberating, utterly ridiculous (in the best way) non-stop ride.
If you read all the way down here, just go and see it. It’s wild, fun, silly, and just a great example of drag culture and how it can make you feel a whole spectrum of emotions in ways you never quite expect.
