A delightful and hilarious multimedia game show
Mat Ewins is recently engaged and needs to make some money. He’s going to do that by selling a game show to America, and this is that show. Strap yourselves in for a fantastic multimedia-driven time, with prizes to be won! Well, sort of.
Resplendent in a shiny suit, we have some general crowd work from Mat, assisted by the Chatbot 2.0 and a bit from his tech, a very insightful look at a search history, before getting into a brief singalong of the song’s Franz Ferdinand-adjacent theme tune to start earning our rewards. That will be 30p for the winning team, thank you very much. The prize fund had begun.
We then romped through a boisterous collection of arcade-style games with audience members being handed various controllers to win prizes for their teams with varying levels of success and precision. Chaos inevitably ensued, and skill levels mattered not (perhaps easy to say from someone on the winning team).
Interwoven and interspersed with the games are his trademark multimedia elements – these are not just your average clips, the design, production values, intricacy and forethought of the interactive elements is just extraordinary and to be hugely applauded. Of which we did, and also got handy reminders of how oxbow lakes are formed, and when in doubt, buy a new printer. I’ll never look an Exit sign in the same way again.
However, my favourite section of the show revolves around his recent engagement. He’s a romantic man (we see video evidence to that effect, albeit thorny), and so obviously created a video game version. Again, audience skill to select the best options was…interesting, but oh my, get it right and there’s a genius song awaiting you. Sadly, our enormous £4.80 prize pot did not await us at the end of the show, but we’ll gloss over that.
I did however leave the show absolutely giddy and my face aching from laughing so much. Seeing the show is a prize in itself, and you need to experience it too. You don’t want to miss this.
