REVIEW: Diary of A Bald Kid

Rating: 4 out of 5.

“Funny, unapologetic coming of age storyteller showcasing his craft”

“Diary of a Bald Kid” starts off modestly, but it gains momentum and charm as it progresses. Kevin James Doyle masterfully captures the voice of a 13-year-old, delivering a hilarious meta-textual experience of reading something deeply personal—essentially, a diary that was never meant to be shared—to a live audience (and by extension, Amazon Prime viewers). This setup alone is comedic gold, amplified by the dramatic irony of Doyle’s past self (with a great head of hair) being juxtaposed with his present baldness. The dramatic irony of all!

Doyle’s comedic timing is impeccable. He laces his storytelling with sharp cultural references and witty musical jokes that resonate brilliantly, particularly for anyone who’s had to endure assumptions about being a musical theatre enthusiast, Christian, gay or any intersections between these identities. His sincerity and charisma shine through, drawing laughter from genuine, relatable experiences—like recounting youthful crushes, complete with self-aware smirks that make it all the more endearing.

The show is impressively cohesive, with a cyclical narrative that ties everything together by the end. Doyle’s dry, yet uproarious sense of humour keeps the audience engaged. Beneath the laughter lies a touching, relatable story about self-acceptance—a testament to Doyle’s talent for blending humour with heartfelt moments.

While “Diary of a Bald Kid” doesn’t deliver a clear moral or take-home message, its strength lies in its simplicity: it’s an unapologetically hilarious hour of stand-up. Doyle avoids preachiness, opting instead for sincere storytelling that leaves you laughing and nodding in recognition. That and a couple of fart jokes for good measure!
