Fierce, Fabulous and full of fun! Kinky Boots struts it’s stuff

Monday night at the Glasgow King’s Theatre was nothing short of spectacular as Kinky Boots took to the stage in a dazzling display of heart, humour, and high-heeled glamour. With a powerhouse cast led by Strictly Come Dancing star Johannes Radebe as the fabulous Lola,  alongside the immensely talented Courtney Bowman and Dan Partridge, the production  delivered an evening of infectious energy and emotional depth that left the audience both  uplifted and moved.

For those unfamiliar with Kinky Boots, the show—based on the 2005 film and featuring  music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper—follows the journey of Charlie Price, who inherits his  father’s struggling shoe factory. When he crosses paths with Lola, a drag queen in need of  sturdy yet stylish footwear, an unlikely partnership is formed, leading to a story of self acceptance, friendship, and triumph against the odds.

Johannes Radebe’s portrayal of Lola was nothing short of mesmerising. Known for his  elegance and charisma on Strictly, Radebe brought an undeniable star quality to the role,  effortlessly blending humour, vulnerability, and powerhouse vocals. His rendition of “Hold  Me in Your Heart” was a show-stopping moment, delivered with raw emotion that had many  in the audience wiping away tears. His stage presence was electric, commanding attention  with every sassy strut and heartfelt monologue, making Lola both larger-than-life and deeply  relatable.

Courtney Bowman, fresh from her successes in Legally Blonde and Six, was a delight as  Lauren, Charlie’s quirky and endearing love interest. Her impeccable comedic timing,  coupled with strong vocals, made her performance of “The History of Wrong Guys” a  standout moment that had the audience roaring with laughter. Dan Partridge, as the conflicted  Charlie Price, brought a compelling mix of earnestness and frustration to the role, particularly  shining in numbers like “Soul of a Man,” where his internal struggle was laid bare in a  stirring vocal performance.

The supporting cast and ensemble were equally brilliant, bringing boundless energy and  enthusiasm to every scene. The Angels, Lola’s troupe of fierce and fabulous backup dancers,  were a joy to watch, executing complex choreography with precision and attitude. Their  presence elevated every scene they were in, making them an undeniable highlight of the  production.

Visually, the show was a feast for the senses. The set design effectively transported the  audience from the drab confines of the Price & Son factory to the vibrant world of drag  performances, with seamless transitions that kept the momentum flowing. The costumes— particularly Lola’s stunning collection of boots—were dazzling, adding an extra layer of spectacle to the production.

Beyond the glitz and glamour, Kinky Boots carries a powerful message of acceptance,  celebrating diversity and the importance of embracing one’s true self. This production  handled these themes with both sensitivity and joy, ensuring that its impact resonated long  after the final curtain call.

By the end of the night, the entire audience was on their feet, clapping and cheering in a well deserved standing ovation. Kinky Boots at the Glasgow King’s Theatre was not just a  musical—it was an experience, one filled with laughter, tears, and an overwhelming sense of  joy. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the show or experiencing it for the first time, this  production is a must-see. With a cast this strong and a message this uplifting, Kinky  Boots truly proves that sometimes, the best way to step forward is in a fabulous pair of heels.
