REVIEW: Perfect Show For Rachel

Rating: 5 out of 5.

A warm, chaotic and hilarious celebration of Rachel’s humour, her family and the joyful madness she creates on stage

Perfect Show For Rachel is easily one of the most joyful and entertaining things I have seen in ages. It has this brilliant, playful energy that makes you feel like you are stepping into a family who love nothing more than a bit of chaos and a lot of laughter. The whole show centres on Rachel who is Flo’s learning disabled sister. She sits at her control panel, completely in her element, pressing the buttons that decide what will happen next. Each press creates a new scene or a tiny burst of madness, and the cast throw themselves into whatever she asks for with full commitment.

The comedy works beautifully because everything is exaggerated. The overacting is huge, but that is exactly what makes it so funny. Every fall, every dramatic reaction, every silly pose is dialled all the way up and it suits the slapstick style of the show perfectly. You can tell the cast completely understand Rachel’s humour because they match her tone every single time and make it feel effortless.

A small running joke involves Chris the music man who gets kicked out halfway through the show. It is not a major moment but it sparks a few funny little reactions. He reappears occasionally with this cheeky look that makes people laugh, but it sits nicely in the background without taking focus away from Rachel.

The family connection is one of the most touching parts. Flo is brilliant on stage. She knows exactly how to bounce off Rachel’s choices and she clearly understands every tiny nuance of her sister’s humour. Their mum also takes part happily, stepping in with a natural warmth that adds to the atmosphere. Watching the three of them together feels genuinely lovely. It is clear they share years of private jokes and a huge amount of affection, and the audience gets to enjoy that closeness instead of feeling like outsiders looking in.

One of the funniest moments, and the one that had the room howling, was when Rachel turned to Flo’s boyfriend Jackson and simply asked him to come up on stage. No button, no hesitation. She wanted him up there and she made it happen. Jackson’s face was priceless. He had that look of someone who has no idea what he is about to be dragged into but knows he has no choice but to go with it. The whole thing was hilarious and Flo’s reaction added to the moment perfectly. It felt like a proper family tease.

There is also a lovely section with a Kylie song that includes photos from when they all went to see her in concert. It is warm and wholesome, and the way it is woven into the show makes it feel personal without slowing anything down. You can see how much Rachel loves Kylie and how much joy that memory brought to all of them.

The screen and subtitles make it easy for the audience to hear Rachel’s thoughts and choices as they happen. Her reactions pop up clearly, and it means the room can follow exactly what she finds funny or what she wants more of.

The whole show blends big physical comedy, music, silly little scenes and genuine family warmth. It is full of affection and full of fun. I left feeling lighter and genuinely uplifted.

Perfect Show For Rachel lives up to its name in every way. It feels like a celebration of her humour, her world and the people she loves, and it is an absolute joy to watch
