REVIEW: The Ballad of Johnny and June

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Rating: 4 out of 5.

“In the words of Johnny Cash himself – since time nothing’s ever been found stronger than love, and this musical shows that the love for country music definitely hasn’t died.”

Rather than offering up a straightforward jukebox musical, The Ballad of Johnny and June explores the lives of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash through the perspective of their son, John Carter Cash, which gives the story a more emotive, reflective angle throughout.

Even if you have never heard of Johnny and June’s chaotic love story (well, affair…) the show naturally captivates you with the cast’s vocal and musical talents, country-style staging, and engaging storyline that pulls you through the decades of time alongside the characters.

The focus throughout the musical remains firmly on the people behind the music without overcomplicating the story, allowing the audience to connect with Johnny and June as individuals rather than simply viewing them as the country music icons they are. It places a really key emphasis on the relationship that kept drawing them back together, and even as an audience member you can feel the intensity that came with that. Well-known and well-loved songs such as Ring of Fire, Hey Porter, Hurt, and I Walk The Line are woven into the show’s narrative smoothly and timely, allowing for them to shine on the stage without detracting away from the musical’s storyline.

Christopher Ryan Grant delivers a fantastic performance as Johnny Cash. Rather than attempting a strict impersonation he truly captures the essence of the singer, from his stage presence to the quieter moments where his vulnerable side starts to show. Christina Bianco brings a sense of warmth, humour and undeniable strength to the role of June Carter Cash, ensuring she never becomes overshadowed by Johnny’s larger than life personality. Their chemistry is truly convincing from scene one.

Ryan O’Donnell also deserves recognition for his role as John Carter Cash, whose narration provides the framework for the story. The supporting cast also work exceptionally hard, seamlessly moving between characters and musical performances while maintaining the fast pace of the production.

I think that there are certain periods of Johnny and June’s lives could have benefited from a little more depth throughout the musical. Covering decades of history and emotions within the span of 2 hours inevitably means some moments pass quickly, especially during the second half of the show. However, it served in the end as a poignant reminder that time can pass us by quicker than we even realise, just like it did for Johnny and June.

The Ballad of Johnny and June lands so well because it understands that the everlasting appeal and love of Johnny and June lies not only in their musical talents, but in the complicated, passionate and resilient relationship they shared. Supported by excellent performances throughout the cast, this is an engaging musical that will appeal to both devoted country fans and newcomers alike.

This show runs until 13th June 2026 at The Lowry in Salford Quays, before continuing its UK and Ireland tour until September 2026. Tickets are available here.
