REVIEW: All Star Burlesque @ Just The Tonic

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Rating: 4 out of 5.

An Array of Fabulous Costumes and Great Performers

This is an all encompassing variety night of well performed Burlesque. It celebrates the traditions of the art form, while introducing new and innovative acts that live in the memory long after the show ends.

The show is compered by Paul Klaass, who later comes back to perform some circus trickery. Klaass brings a warm energy to the room and weaves the acts together well. You can see how much fun he has as the compere, which only makes the occasion that much more joyous.

The billing featured the talents of Poppy Peachy, Markee de Saw, Anaïs Lune, Mya Dia Monte, Aura MiaDoreHer, Ellie Steingraeber and Miss Sweet Mimi. All acts deserve a review of their own for their skills, and all brought something different to the show. They all clearly enjoy their sets and love bringing the art to new crowds. That joy and passion is infectious. We were treated to a variety of acts including the more classical Burlesque, dancing with hoops, a performance with a bull, a flirtatious unicorn and magnificent costumes.

The costume designers really deserve their own review. They were all absolutely stunning. Whether themed, bold or just insanely sparkly, these outfits have been created with care and love. They deserve to be seen on the stage, it’s almost a shame when they get discarded.

The show was a brilliant showcase of some of the Burlesque talents at the Fringe. While the night was a triumph, there were points that dipped and it felt as if this was still fully finding its feet. Nevertheless, it is a fun, flamboyant and enjoyable hour to spend with these performers.

The International Burlesque Festival has put on a good compilation show, and there is so much more on offer. Burlesque can be avoided by some at the Fringe but I would urge against this. These talents need to be seen and deserve to be praised to the highest extent.
