Transmission’ is a vital must-see: an entertaining, fascinating show

“Big Jimmy is here to tell you how to keep yur grannies safe and Make Scotland Cis Again!” Topical and terrifically true to Scotland, “Transmission” promises an entertaining, necessary show, and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. The show was produced by Sanctuary Queer Arts, devised and performed by Nelly Kelly, and supported by the National Theatre of Scotland. It’s no wonder – exploring the public perception of transness in the current time, “Transmission” is a vital must-see. It doesn’t pull back from the gritty truths of societal understandings and discourse surrounding trans people, but also offers levity and hope in what is really a very difficult, dark topic.

From the first moment – a ‘trans cult’ meeting Kelly’s character leads, in a superbly brilliant caricature – ‘Transmission’ comes to life onstage in a flourish of satire and sass. Kelly is a force to be reckoned with: onstage they oscillate wonderfully between moments of sheer brilliant comedy and painful drama. They very aptly call attention to issues in Scotland that face trans people, in such a way that avoids feeling ‘preachy’. Kelly is a welcome voice that adds to the fantastic political shows taking place at the Frimge, a unique character among the crowds. This show couldn’t be performed by anyone other than Kelly, as their energy and chemistry with the audience is infectious.

What the opposition party to gender critical rhetoric needs is ridicule – a robust satire of the gender critical arguments, a breakdown of their most extreme ideas to highlight the stupidity of the group. And ‘Transmission’ gives all that and more. Blending real footage from politicians and fictionalised, dramatised moments, the show works to connect audiences across different genders and backgrounds. At its heart, “Transmission” is a human story, with great care given to the voices of trans people. It serves to remind us of the current political landscape and of the arts themselves in Scotland, highlighting the importance of authentic storytelling at the Edinburgh Fringe.
