REVIEW: From the Heart

An intimate, heartfelt journey through the life and lyrics of a musical legend

Don Black’s From the Heart was an intimate and heartfelt production, reminiscent of New York
City’s cabaret scene. What made the show particularly special was that we weren’t simply
listening to Don Black’s music; we were being invited into his life through his most personal
medium of expression: lyrics and songwriting. Each song offered a glimpse into his remarkable
journey, from defining life experiences and reflections on growing older to the touching love
story he shared with his wife. It felt like a rare opportunity to understand the man behind so
many beloved songs.
The cast featured five incredible performers: Caroline O’Connor, Frances Mayli McCann, Shona
McGarty, Michael D. Xavier and Clive Rowe. Each brought their own distinctive personality,
vocal talent and theatrical flair to the stage. The production also features a different special
guest each evening, and we were fortunate enough to see the wonderful Michael Ball.
Although the show was relatively short at just 90 minutes, it was packed with musical gems,
including new songs alongside some of Black’s most celebrated work from James Bond and
Sunset Boulevard.
What struck me most was the extraordinary versatility of Black’s songwriting. Every song had its
own unique character, story and emotional depth. Whether humorous, nostalgic, romantic or
poignant, his lyrics conveyed so much feeling and revealed an incredible ability to capture the
complexities of life in just a few verses.
Huge credit must also go to the performers, who brought every number to life with such
character, expression and thoughtful choreography. They effortlessly transformed into different
personalities as each song demanded, making the evening feel as much like a theatrical journey
as a musical celebration. A beautiful, moving and thoroughly entertaining tribute to an
extraordinary life and career. I left with an even greater appreciation for the artistry of
songwriting.
The show performs at Garrick Theatre until 18 October. Tickets here.
