REVIEW: Grubby Little Mitts

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Still weird. Still wonderful.

It feels almost like fate that a last minute first review of Grubby Little Mitts debut in 2022 would repeat itself. Due to a diary shift and a realisation I could make the first show of 2023 I rushed to get my seat to this stellar sketch act.

Their debut became one of the most talked about shows of the fringe and landed them the Amused Moose Comedy Award 2022 for Top Debut Sketch Show so the pressure to replicate that success can be felt throughout the show.

The opener is a spectacular bit of sketch work – starting in the hyper natural and taking you to the edge of absurdity and tension. Similar to the closer which genuinely left me weeping… no spoilers. The show is Woven together with sketches both absurd and challenging – with a horny hen repeating sketch which I could watch for days. It is however here where some of the pull back and reveal punchlines sometimes seem redundant – the sketches themselves being funny enough to not require the add on. Transitions are slick and the use of the space is inventive – utilising two boxes for the whole show. And a myriad of coats and props completing the fun.

Where the duo of Sullivan Brown and Rosie Nichols excel is in their true commitment to each moment. They are always listening and responding – giving the sketches fire and life. As an audience we’re additionally, in contrast to last year,  treated to some rather beautiful harmonies – showing just how annoyingly talented the pair are. My highlight was definitely Rosies overly relatable awkward  human asking someone out – the descent into saying too much feeling like a personal attack.

Yet again an Edinburgh must watch!
