REVIEW: Antarctic Monkeys

Rating: 4 out of 5.

A high energy, crowd pleasing night of entertainment for everyone. Electric.

A successful tribute to their inspiration, the four piece band rocked out to an energetic crowd at the O2 Edinburgh. With a set mainly consisting of the Arctic Monkeys’ most popular rock songs, slowly integrating their more subdued melodies, the group known as the Antarctic Monkeys had the audience on its feet and belting throughout their set. With over two decades of experience performing together, the band has developed their own spin on the Arctic Monkeys’ discography earning them a fanbase in their own right. It is not hard to understand the appeal of a successful cover band in these uncertain financial times—mixed with their talent, it is a winning combination.

Their tour set comprises a mix of old and new and a tone evocative of its muse. The show was a crowd pleaser from start to finish for the diverse group gathered, representing a lovely spread of generations. The atmosphere was electric and highlighted the universality of music. With few breaks, the show maintained a solid energy and pace keeping musicians and audience alike engaged.

However, the show did suffer a few technical faults and maintaining energy meant sacrificing maintaining tune, as the instruments had a tendency to fall out of a cohesive key from time to time. Although a beautifully executed show, there was an, overall, unsuccessful audio mix which left the audience with a musical guide through each song, but little in the way of showcasing hitherto unheard musical prowess. There were whole sections of vocals that were indiscernible over the overpowering levels all fighting for prominence. Coupled with the lights that fell out of sync on a few occasions, I was disoriented as an audience member. This is not to discredit the musicians obvious love and dedication to their craft. Care went into every aspect of the show, it just needs a little practical cleaning and maybe a longer sound check.

Overall a triumphant and successful cover band for the four excellent musicians in their own right. With a little fine tuning I could hear how this group could give their namesake a run for their money. Check out their upcoming gigs here.
