Feed me, Edinburgh! The Singing, Man-Eating Plant of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ is Raging Once Again

The Edinburgh University Savoy Opera Group presents the hit off-Broadway musical ‘Little Shop of Horrors’, running January 23-27 at the Church Hill Theatre.

Despite the temptation of a host of weird and wonderful tactics to keep your houseplants alive through the Scottish winter, the finale of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ pleads – Don’t Feed The Plants!

Seymour Krelborn, a miserable clerk working in a flower shop on Skid Row, takes the meaning of carnivorous plants to a whole new level after happening upon a strange and interesting specimen he names Audrey II. What starts out as simply feeding this plant an innocent few drops of blood, soon leads him down a dark and unexpected path, revealing Audrey II’s true intention: world domination.

This classic musical by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, of Disney fame, is a true joy: wrapped up in lighthearted comedy, the story is, at its core, a criticism of capitalism and how it pushes human beings to leave their morals aside in the pursuit of money and success. With fantastic numbers such as the iconic ‘Suddenly Seymour’ and ‘Skid Row’, this production promises to be a treat for both longtime fans of the show and those discovering it for the first time, leaving you second guessing even the most unassuming of plants.

“Under the surface, Little Shop of Horrors is a critique of the capitalist mindset and a cautionary tale of giving up your morals in order to achieve fortune and fame. We’ve tried to highlight the tempting lure of wealth through a dazzling and vibrant Audrey II, that soon drops their facade and transforms into an unbearable and scary botanical demon.”

Amy Stinton, Co-Director

“Little Shop of Horrors is an extraordinary but fast paced musical, so we were keen to create a variety of engaging characters through which the audiences can experience the story. In particular, we were excited to reimagine the character of Audrey as an intelligent and empathetic voice who does not falter under the insanity around her.”

Tom Beazley, Co-Director
