Laugh out loud with your new BFF in this sparky debut hour
Lou Taylor starts her show with the best day of her life. And it’s a corker. Over the course of an hour, we’re brought into her inner confidences, with a combination of stories and short films, covering topics from unorthodox childhood career plans, eyebrow disasters, early relationships and the effect of 90s media on all of the above. We flip back and forth between the past and now, comparing generational differences and disappointing sexual encounters.
A natural storyteller, Lou’s show is delivered with a conspiratorial air – you’re being let into the deepest secrets of a new friend, in a engaging and likeable manner, as demonstrated with her audience interactions. Peppering the stories are 6-7 short films featuring Lou and friends, and a surprise guest to the stage, this performance feels balanced, with well-timed callbacks. As we reach the end of the show, there is one video which felt a stylistically different to the rest of the videos, and perhaps jarred a little in comparison to the others, especially leading into the finale.
In a show about the past, it would be all too easy to rely on ‘remember blue Smarties’ rose-tinted type of nostalgia – however, Lou provides a considered observational narrative, weighing up her past life and ambitions, and how her present life has shaped up. Not blindly accepting the way things were, but questioning why on earth we did the things we did in the 90s and 00s, in a way that feels fresh and undeniably funny.
For a self-produced debut hour, this is a very accomplished work and one to watch for the future.
