Pour yourself a cup of ambition and get ready for a night of laughter, empowerment, and toe-tapping tunes as Edinburgh University Footlights proudly presents 9 to 5 The Musical, running from 11th to 15th February 2025 at Pleasance Theatre, Edinburgh.
Step into the buzzing office of Consolidated Industries, where three resilient women—Violet, Judy, and Doralee—have had enough of their insufferable, sexist boss, Franklin Hart Jr. With typewriters clacking and phones ringing, the trio plot a hilarious and daring plan to turn the tables on their egotistical employer. But as their schemes unfold, an unexpected visit from the CEO threatens to unravel their carefully crafted revenge. Will they succeed in changing the workplace for the better?
Based on the iconic 1980 film starring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin, 9 to 5 The Musical boasts a lively and unforgettable score by Dolly Parton herself. This feel-good comedy combines mischievous antics, witty dialogue, and a whole lot of heart, proving that workplace justice never goes out of style.
A Story of Solidarity and Empowerment
Co-Director Ellie Jackson shares her thoughts on the production:
“9 to 5 The Musical is a vibrantly comedic tale of female mischief and solidarity. In bringing this story to life, we’ve highlighted the importance of friendship and individuality in Violet, Doralee, and Judy. From innocent beginnings to daring schemes—and plenty of obstacles along the way—this show is a joyous celebration of resilience, camaraderie, and standing up for what’s right. Its message remains as timely and impactful today as it was when the iconic film first premiered.”
Co-Director Max Middleton adds:
“There is a signature Dolly stamp on 9 to 5 that seems undeniable. It is unapologetically feminine and far from withholding in its gaudy aesthetic, big numbers, and campy moments. We wanted to make it not just a nostalgic tribute to a classic film and artist with our direction, but also a stupidly fun and enjoyable experience for the audience and those involved. There is a great focus on pace, angles, and movement within this show, aiming to replicate the frenetic feeling of the quickly changing ’70s. Don’t be fooled by the pink – this show packs a big ol’ glittery punch, and we can’t wait to blow you away!”
