A burst of rich colour and vivacity.

This double-bill performance blends two striking choreographic voices in a stunning showcase of energy and form. Choreography by Trisha Brown Dance Company & Noé Soulier as part of Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpel at Sadlers Wells East.

In The Fall is a visual feast of solos, duets, and ensemble work. The dancers are in vibrant blue, yellow, and red, with gorgeously bold costumes by Kaye Voyce. The performance begins with an intricate duet, where partners gradually replace each other, before expanding into a captivating ensemble sequence.

The choreography in In The Fall is expansive and dynamic, emphasizing both individual expression and collective harmony. The dancers move with an effortless grace, the shifts between solos, duets, and ensemble work creating an ongoing conversation of connection and contrast. The visual impact of the costumes, combined with the ever-changing configurations of the dancers, gives the piece a cinematic quality, making it as much a visual artwork as a dance performance.

Particularly impressive were moments when the parts of the ensemble were in perfect sync, and then fluidly shifted to different formations, creating a seamless flow of energy. This fluidity was all the more captivating paired with the sonic duet of Florian Hecker’s electronic soundscape, which intensified the emotional resonance of the dance.

In brilliant contrast, Working Title introduces a sense of freedom and playfulness that feels both refreshing and liberating. It’s messy, unpredictable, and full of energy—perfectly capturing a sense of youthful abandon. The dancers’ rapid, erratic movements create a sense of joyful chaos, as they tumble and collide in a dynamic, unpredictable rhythm. The choreography focussing on more unrefined energy of movement. The sonic dynamism of Peter Zummos’ sound works wonders with the vibrant patchwork costumes of Elizabeth Cannon.

What wonderful work by the Trisha Brown Dance Company in creating a rich space of such varied performances that celebrate the versatility of contemporary dance. From the fluid, synchronized ensemble work of In The Fall to the playful, messy energy of Working Title, the evening is a stunning exploration of form, colour, and movement.
