Humorous and bold. Talk about bringing a story to life
The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives was a truly entertaining theatrical experience that brought the pages of Lola Shoneyin’s novel to life. The play adapts the story of the larger-than-life Baba Segi and his four wives, balancing humour, cultural richness and some heavier elements.
Starting off with the musicality of the production. The incorporation of singing, dancing, and live traditional instruments, particularly the talking drum, shekere and flute, transported the audience straight to Nigeria where the story is set. The use of the Yoruba language throughout the play was a top feature. It was delivered in a way that was clear and accessible, even for those unfamiliar with the language. For me, it added such authenticity to play in a way that didn’t alienate the audience.
While the story touches on sensitive and potentially triggering themes, these were handled with thoughtfulness and care. Rotimi Babatunde adapts the story in a way that the play never trivialised the serious moments. Director Femi Elufowoju Jr also adds to this, weaving in humour without taking away the gravity of the issues explored. It was a testament to the strength of the cast that they could shift tones so effortlessly and still keep the audience deeply engaged.
Every actor shone in their own right, really bringing to life each character big or small. Special mention must go to Patrice Naiambana, who played Baba Segi. Surrounded by a cast of powerhouse women, he held his ground with charisma and a commanding presence, leading the ensemble exactly like the character he embodied.
As someone who loves the book, I found the play both touching and faithful to its source material. It was so unapologetic about its cultural impact and never watered down its realness surrounding the realities some African women experience. But it stands on its own as a humorous and entertaining production, definitely one to watch whether you’ve read the novel or not. Now showing at the Arcola theatre until May 31st!
