REVIEW: The Poetess

Rating: 5 out of 5.

An original premise from a brilliantly talented creative

To combine poetry with theatre is a difficult task indeed: to do it with the precision and eloquence of Olivia Dodd (@oliviadodd) in The Poetess is another task altogether. A unique concept, pulsing with raw emotion and heartfelt humanity, what sets this apart is the way The Poetess turns ordinary everyday life into something artistic, reminding us that even in simplicity, there is beauty and poetry.

As someone who has their reservations about poetry, I found myself charmed and moved by The Poetess in ways I wasn’t expecting! Dodd’s creativity and originality in this spoken-word, hour-long piece brought the audience together, weaving emotions into a tapestry that is both intimate and universal.

The performance is a fabulous reminder of how art, drama, and poetry can tether us together: across time, space, and emotional distance. It celebrates how language shapes not only how we express ourselves but also how we can find ourselves in the words written by others.

The Poetess is a gentle triumph, showing that the ordinary can become transcendent when filtered through a poetic lens. Beautifully performed and sensitively written, this is theatre at its most human.

Ultimately, Olivia Dodd has created something wonderful. It reminds us that legacy is not always grand or loud… it can be quiet, made of lines scribbled in notebooks or whispered late at night.

The Poetess is on at the Fringe from the 1st to the 25th August at the Pleasance Dome between 11:55am and 12:55pm. Buy tickets here: https://www.edfringe.com/tickets/whats-on/the-poetess.
