Charlotte English crowned winner of prestigious Stephen Sondheim Society award on talent-packed afternoon

Charlotte English was crowned winner of the 18th annual Stephen Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year (SSSSPOTY) on Sunday.

English, a student at BIRD Conservatoire, overcame an absurdly talented field of young performers, each of whom was required to perform once piece by Sondheim and one piece of new writing.

Her polished and expressive performances of “I Read” from the Passion and “The Sparrow’s Tale” from The Wicker Husband impressed an all-star judging panel that deliberated for 15 minutes before selecting a winner.

Second place was awarded to fellow BIRD Conservatoire student Taziva-Faye Katsande, who performed a fantastic rendition of “Last Midnight” from Into the Woods and “Peace in the Puzzle” from Turing: A Musical.

Rosie Sutton, from the University of Oxford, took third place with a memorable version of “Getting Married Today” from Company and “Colour In My Cheeks” from Heart of Winter

With previous finalists including Cynthia Erivo and Taron Egerton, SSSSPOTY has an impressive track record of identifying young talent, and I have no doubt every contestant will be gracing West End stages in years to come.

Aside from the highly competitive performances between the rival students, the audiences were treated to a feat of entertainment.

The show opened to a full-throttle of Company from, well… Company, performed by the 12 contestants and three reserves, and greeted by rapturous applause from the family and friends gathered in the Sondheim Theatre.

These few minutes alone were enough to assure me that every one of the contestants who stepped on stage would be of the highest quality.

The audience remained in safe hands throughout as host Bella Brown, fresh from a five-star run of Into the Woods at the Bridge Theatre, expertly guided proceedings and provided plenty of laughs.

During breaks in the program audiences to some incredible performances from previous contestants, including numbers from 2025 SSSSPOTY winner Georgia Blessitt, 2019 winner Stuart Thompson and West End star Gracie McGonigal.

We were also treated to a medley of hits from West Side Story by the talented National Youth Musical Theatre Ensemble.

The Sondheim Society was set up with the aim of promoting the legendary composer and lyricist’s shows. Part of this commitment involved putting on the contest every year, which has grown from 10 applicants at its inception in 2007 to over 300 today.

SSSSPOTY partnered with New UK Musicals, a store of digital sheet music from the next generation of musical theatre writers, fulfilling Sondheim’s wish to promote new writing.

The competition was a fitting tribute to the late, great Sondheim, and an entertaining evening for the family and friends gathered in the theatre that bears his name.
