A strong set from a bright star of Scottish comedy
From the first moment we meet Peroni, it is clear that we are in safe hands. She erupts onto the stage with a captivating energy that does not falter throughout the hour. She commands the space and has the audience hooked on every word, very much looking like a seasoned veteran on the comedy circuit.
The set itself follows the story of Peroni’s upbringing through childhood and her travels, ending up at Edinburgh University. It is a story of belonging and finding yourself, which is nicely told. There is a nice emotional undercurrent, cutting subtly through the jokes, of someone who has started to really find their place and their self.
Peroni provides an interesting style of comedy, mixing between observational humour and clever one liners, building a set that delivers the laughs and keeps you on board throughout the hour. Even when a joke does not quite land, Peroni manages to keep you on board, or try to push the punchline to eventually break the audience.
The lack of fear of failure or changing parts of the set was particularly impressive. Peroni is still learning and refining her set, and she never backed down from trying something different or changing it up.
That being said, there were parts towards the middle of the set that needed refining. There were moments where we ebbed and the jokes didn’t hit as well. However, this is still a show in its infancy and there is time to refine.
All that is clear at this stage, is that Eva Peroni is a name that we will get to know in the future.
