Outrageous, fast-paced and unapologetically silly, Roger Prick’s latest outing is a masterfully executed piece of comic theatre provided you are willing to get a little messy along the way.
Roger Prick is back in town, this time launching his brand-new erotic memoir while unveiling some much-needed updates to his literary classics for the modern, “awoken” era. Complete with new and improved illustrations and edits designed to appease the Bechdel test, there is apparently no longer any sexist content in his books. Just don’t buy the old copies second-hand as Prick himself warns, “The sticky pages are your fault.”
Introducing his new memoir, the audience is invited on a whirlwind journey through a career defined by questionable entrepreneurship, forbidden love and plenty of salacious writing. It is a suitably outrageous premise for a show that wastes no time embracing its own absurdity.
The performance is packed with quick-witted dialogue, delivered directly and confidently to the awaiting audience. Audience participation is central to the experience, with spectators never quite knowing what might come next. If you are easily scandalised or uncomfortable with the prospect of being sprayed with beer or handed a paper phallus this is probably not the show for you.
There is, however, considerably more to commend than mere shock value. The narrative moves at a brisk pace, maintaining momentum while gradually revealing Prick’s increasingly questionable exploits. Its creative structure allows the story to unfold in an engaging and unpredictable fashion, with the performer skillfully balancing character, comedy and audience interaction.
The result is a deliberately chaotic but remarkably well-handled offering. Beneath the beer, phallic props and deliberately provocative humour lies a carefully constructed performance that understands exactly what its audience has come to see.
