A Hilarious and slightly disturbing search for connection
Sarah Roberts starts the show fully cloaked, dragging along chains as an eerie refrain plays. But once she reaches the stage, the show is anything but scary. We are greeted by a smiling and enthusiastic comedian who is ultimately looking for connection.
The set follows this throughline, as we hear about Roberts’ troubles in her love life and struggles with finding someone to keep hold of. This is twinned with some morbid discussion about absorbing siblings in the womb. While it may seem taboo, Roberts speaks openly about it, leading to a gory and grotesque conclusion.
There are elements of horror throughout, and moments of towing a surreal and quite dark line, but Roberts handles this excellently. She is a wonderful performer, and holds the audience in her grasp throughout the show. We hang on her every word, laugh at every joke, no matter how dark they may be.
The show is also incredibly written, as Roberts builds snippets that bring us to the final reveals. It is witty and well crafted, and almost always hilarious. Whether she is talking about herself and her own body image or her fascination with a certain orifice, the set never falters. It is perfectly pitched and paced to challenge and entertain in equal parts.
A moment as well must be reserved for Richard, the audience member who almost became a muse, and wound up having a wonderful and complimentary back and forth with Roberts.
This is one not to miss, a comedian on top of her game blending the grotesque, absurd and comedic brilliantly. Roberts certainly does not disappoint.
