A joyous ride through a turbulent life
As we walk in, Woody and the band play some songs and welcome us into the world of Woody. Instantly, we feel welcomed and there is a warmth that sticks around throughout the play.
Woody Guthrie, played wonderfully by David M. Lutken, is portrayed with said warmth and a determination that does not fail throughout the play. Lutken is simply awe inspiring in this role. He brings an energy and likability to Guthrie that makes his story all the more hard to hear, and joyous to follow.
Woody Guthrie is simply a very impressive person, and this piece showcases that brilliantly. From his advocacy of the everyday, working-class person to his political activism, we are shown a picture of a man who was a tour de force and a thorn in any authoritarians side. You fall for him in an instant, and although he does have his flaws and issues, is so wonderfully dedicated to righteous causes that you cannot do anything but like him.
Alongside Lutken, is a supporting cast of David Finch, Nyssa Grant and Raquel Chavez.. These three are incredible throughout. Not only do they flawlessly move from character to character, but they play a multitude of instruments with undeniable talent. It seems that there is barely an instrument that cannot be played with virtuosic skill between these three. Combining with Lutken’s performance, this band come together and create something that is truly brilliant.
What was perhaps most striking from the story, and was probably the most heartbreaking thing about the piece, was that it made you draw parallels to our modern society, and realise just how little has really changed. Everything Guthrie fought against still affects us today. We all need to channel a little Guthrie in today’s society, to fight the good fight.
It really is a wonderful piece of gig theatre, and I defy anyone to come away and not want to listen to more of Guthrie’s music, to remember the man and what he fought for.
