“Intricately linked stories building to a beautiful conclusion”
Magnet North brings us their latest offering, We Will Hear the Angels. It is a slow piece that purposefully builds to a final moment of community. There is minimal dialogue throughout, which leaves us to watch striking pieces of movement that build in various parts of the stage.
The cast of Apphia Campbell, Mia Scott, Greg Sinclair, Daniel Padden and Nicholas Bone work together wonderfully to create powerful, lasting images that only act to emphasise the final moment. They start so isolated, entangled in loneliness, before slowly coming together as the play concludes. It is very much a piece that can be interpreted in several ways, not revealing much to the audience, but never failing to be powerful.
Written by Bone, it is simple in its dialogue but intricate in its story. This is further complimented by the direction of Bone and Zanotti, who help build to the beautiful crescendo. The set and stage design is also amazing, and helps to emphasise the loneliness and togetherness throughout the piece.
At the heart of this piece is music. Slowly starting as separate small pieces, it builds to each player joining each other in a circle at the middle of the stage. It speaks volumes to the ability of music to bring people together and was a really affecting way to conclude the piece.
It takes time to get going, and is maybe a little too slow to begin with, but as it builds, it more than makes up for it. The addition of the Video and captioning was great, a good example of accessible theatre that is integrated into the writing.
It is quite difficult to understand to begin with, and could maybe have benefitted from being clearer in points. But it is still a wonderful addition to the festival, and a great showcase of a Scottish company doing some great work.
