“Master gag-smith delivers an hour of slick standup about mortality”
By comparison to some of John-Luke Roberts’ previous Fringe offerings, this is a low-concept proposition. After all he has previously performed for an entire hour in Chaucerian English and another while completely naked. This is a conscious and deliberate mainstream turn.
What I Talk About When I Run About Talking is a polished hour of stand-up built around therapy, mental health, mortality and the prospect of facing down death. His ear for phrasing and finding comic potential in almost every expression, sound and turn of phrase are remarkable. Even a fairly casual observation can be shaped into a neatly constructed gag, delivered with the precision of a veteran performer. The hour moves along at a consistently brisk pace, with one well-crafted joke following another.
The deeper themes give the show a personal dimension, but they are largely treated as raw material for comedy rather than subjects explored in any sustained way – a meta-truth spoken by Roberts’ own therapist and quoted during the show. There are plenty of set-ups on deeper themes, but the show does not necessarily have anything more to say about these topics. Perhaps that is the point: it doesn’t need to. Instead, we are treated to how Roberts can turn even the most difficult subjects into expertly timed comic material, and there will be few rooms at this year’s Fringe filled with quite so much sustained rolling laughter.
The fact that this turn towards more conventional stand-up comes just as Live at the Apollo – the most recognisable vehicle for mainstream British comedy success – has been cancelled is used as a gag in itself.
Long-term fans may bemoan the dialling back of the oddball silliness that has made him a must-see for so long, but there may be a whole new audience drawn to watch someone who can so straightforwardly nail the craft of stand-up.
