A joyful antidote to every ill of the modern world
It is much easier to understand how cults form after seeing Rob Auton. His latest show, JUPITER, sees him as an estate agent on the planet Jupiter. Continuing with the spirit of last year’s CAN: The Story of a Man Called Can, in which Auton took on the persona of a comedic quasi-guru and motivational speaker who set out to achieve world peace.
The premise allows Auton to enter into a fictional conversation with two Jupiter residents considering a move to Earth. Through this, he offers an uplifting and spirited advert of our planet and its inhabitants. He celebrates everything from the underappreciated act of breathing to the naming of the Pot Noodle.
For longtime fans JUPITER is Auton in his sweet spot – the poet laureate of little things and philosopher of the commonplace. Approaching ordinary life with genuine wonder, drawing attention to the details that make our lives a bit fuller and funnier. There is nobody quite as adept at spotting where the mundane can acquire meaning. But this show is also funny, even contains some proper jokes, in amongst the storytelling and the poetic musings.
For the uninitiated, this is Rob Auton’s thirteenth show at the Fringe. A multi-award-winning comedian, poet, writer, podcaster and actor, he has built a career spanning numerous credits and highlights. As he briefly mentions in this show, recently included starring opposite Danny Dyer in Marching Powder – a development that came as a complete surprise to this reviewer.
Whether you’re already a convert or entirely new to his work, it’s difficult to leave this show without a slightly more positive outlook. If you don’t, I’m afraid you may be part of the problem.
