Brilliantly Bizarre with Astonishing Performances
At the side of a motorway is an empty diner-style cafe. It is quiet, until the aliens arrive. In this Lynchian, absurdist play you really do not know what is coming next. It constantly keeps you on your toes until its maddening, thrilling ending.
The play is fronted by Abigail Sinclair as the gothic, drug abusing Lucy, and Samantha Begeman as the at first unassuming Maeve, who later becomes entirely unhinged. These two actors are absolutely sensational throughout. They have an unrelenting energy and have the audience in the palm of their hands. Sinclair extends her stage to include the audience, no one is safe; while Begeman begins quite mild mannered before fully flexing her sizable acting chops as the play nears its ending.
The cast is rounded out by Dominic Bryant, who holds a powerful presence as Felix, and Daniel Cuckow who charms as the enigmatic Dr. Rudmore. I cannot talk highly enough about the talents of this cast. They have chemistry to spare, and are mind blowing throughout.
The piece is written and directed by Cuckow and Sinclair to great effect. They manage to build a suspenseful world that is infused with horror and gore. A shout out must also be given to the SFX, props and lighting design, by Holly Demaine and Clare McLoughlin, whose creations only add to the suspenseful nature of the piece.
This play won’t be for everyone. However, it is a brilliant piece of absurdist theatre, that captures and confuses you in the same breath. A perfect mix that leaves you not entirely certain what you have just experienced, only certain that it will live in the memory for a long time.
