REVIEW: Casey Filips: What A Character

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Uniquely bizarre energy that challenges the audience and brings the laughs

As soon as Casey Filips comes onto the stage we know we are in for something totally unique. We meet four characters throughout the show: a bouncer, a secret agent, a sound recordist and Peter guarding the gates of heaven. Filips brings each of these to life in amazing fashion, completely changing for each character.

We start with the bouncer, who lays down the rules for the show then throws the audience out and takes them back in over and over again. This could be one of the strongest and funniest opening to a show I have seen in a long time, and I was standing outside for most of it. It is a genius opening as it instantly settles the audiences and is a sure fire way to bring laughter and fun.

The laughs then do not let up as we meet the next few characters: the hapless secret agent who cannot stop shooting himself in the foot… or slightly higher than the foot as it transpires; an enthusiastic sound recordist with an ear for ambient sound and the guardian to the gates of heaven, who judges us based on the information presented through the show. Filips flips between these characters expertly, always showcasing a keen ability in acting and clowning.

This show is a combination of clowning and sketch character comedy. These things work seamlessly together to deliver a joyous hour of entertainment. Reuben Solo is on hand to direct Filips, and does a great job, helping to remove any boundaries between performer and audience. Indeed, the audience is more than happy to jump into this piece with Filips. He manages to make you feel uncomfortable and comfortable at the same moment.

The opening is strong, and the other characters, while funny, do not quite live up to the opening hilarity. However, that does not detract from this being a wonderful hour of comedy that does not let up in laughter or entertainment.
