Hilarious, Heartfelt, a Wonderful Story about Boys Learning to be Men
Fast Snail Productions deliver We Have A Dream under the guise of four friends desperate to see Scotland play at the 2024 Euros. What we see, in actual fact, is a clever and poignant exploration of the male inability to properly talk to their friends, and what the pressure of holding onto their issues in can lead to.
The play, written by Jordan Monks and Dylan Frew, is nothing short of fantastic. It combines the witty interplay of four friends perfectly with the emotional baggage each of them is carrying. Monks and Frew manage to quickly introduce these characters and expertly build their relationships over the play. Nothing feels forced or rings untrue, it feels real and the characters feel lived in.
Monks, playing Jamesy, and Frew as Tam are joined in the ensemble cast by Adam Edgar as Cammy, Robbie Hall as Stevie and Laura Doppel as Andrea. Each of these actors shine together and alone. Hall is utterly endearing and brings a vulnerability to Stevie; Edgar is brilliantly stubborn and confused as Cammy; while Doppel commands the stage as the confident and funny Andrea. Monks and Frew additionally provide plenty of heart and laughs along the way with stellar performances.
The high standard of acting on display is enhanced by the direction of Jorgie Buchan. They skillfully manage each character so no one is under represented, while ensuring that the comedy lands well. It is a bright and brilliant play in which every element blends well together.
Although it only had a short run, I am sure We Have A Dream will live on. With a little further development, and some smoother transitions, this will be a special play by a company that is worth keeping an eye on.
