“Family Fun with daring aerial acrobatics”

From the first entrance of the performers, scored by Don’t Stop Believin’ it is clear that this is going to be a circus full of fun for everyone. Throughout it is clear that each member of the group enjoys what they do, and it helps that they’re really good at it.

There are two main components to this production. Firstly, the acrobatics and circus elements are amazing. These stunts, and indeed the acrobats, seem to defy gravity. Whether working with straps, a seesaw or in an intricate twirly cage, the performances are brilliant. There is a particular moment where one of these performers lets go of the other mid-air, and your heart leaps into your chest. It felt genuinely dangerous to watch, but you quickly realise that this troupe is safe in each other’s hands. The Revel Puck Circus is brimming with talent and everyone works hard to ensure it is wickedly impressive.

The other half of the show, cleverly played as the next piece of kit is being set up, is the clown. It feels like an homage to a more vintage version of the clown, the fool of the show, who is put down and sad, but finds joy by the end. This clown goes on a journey with a lion who seems to grow quickly through the play. They are also a talented performer, particularly on a unicycle, seemingly able to balance on anything. These moments with the clown are a lot offun, and bring some heart into the show.

There are many brilliant moments in this show, and everything works well together. However, it is missing a little bit of polish. The set changes do take a long time, and that hurts some of the pacing of the circus, it is almost stop start in places. That is an obvious drawback of the Fringe and the logistics of making everything safe, but there needs to be a little more to keep the momentum up.

Nevertheless, this is a very fun circus that is well put together. The performers deserve all the praise they will get. You will feel awe and joy throughout as you witness the talents of The Revel Puck Circus.

The Revel Puck Circus: The Wing Scuffle Spectacular runs until 29th August (not 17th and 24th) at 16.10. Tickets are available here.
