“Completely Poignant and Brilliantly Funny Stand Up from a Fringe Debut”

Adi Parmar debuts at the Fringe with his show Sunny Boy. This is a fun and introspective hour of comedy that tugs at the heartstrings and builds to be an affirming story for Parmar, as he navigates his queer identity.

The show revolves around Parmar discovering his sexuality and the effects that has on his Indian family, particularly his parents. As he moves away and discovers more about himself, he blossoms into the person we see before us, unashamedly camp and utterly brilliant. He has become a loving father in a queer family and a member of a community, the only people left behind are his parents. This forms the basis of the show as Parmar moves towards fully coming out. It is quite poignant, while also being incredibly funny. Parmar has written a great set of comedy that balances storytelling with punchlines brilliantly.

He is a wonderful stage presence throughout. Parmar holds your attention and does not let it leave. He manages to subvert our expectations throughout, often examining the heteronormative societal standards through a queer looking glass, to great effect. He is fun and light while engaging in quite challenging subject matter and ultimately is an endearing performer. His style blends storytelling with a more one liner style of comedy. It blends nicely and allows breathing time between punchlines, which then helps the jokes to land strongly throughout. There is barely a joke that does not land in this show.

The ending is a significant moment in the story, as we find out about Parmar’s family and how he plans to progress his own story. It is a genuine and heartfelt end to a wonderful piece of stand up. You leave with a warmth in your heart, and a positive outlook for the future.

Adi Parmar delivers on his debut Fringe, and is a brilliant talent. He is definitely one to watch as his career progresses, and one to catch during his run this year at the Fringe.
