A Manipulation and Misdirection Masterclass
Chris Cook brings his new magic show, Heist: How to Steal A Masterpiece to the fringe this year. He frames it as a show he is still figuring out, but it seems anything but that. It is a slick and well put together hour of trickery that keeps you on your toes.
Cook is a magnetic performer. He grabs your interest from the opening moment and keeps it throughout the show. He holds an impressive air of mystery that keeps you guessing until the bitter end. The show itself is a slow burner, ramping up and up until its impressive conclusion. Cook is clearly at the top of his game, consistently showcasing his skills as a magician within the show.
We follow Cook as he tries to steal a Masterpiece from under our noses. To do this, he introduces us to some more basic trickery and works his way up to the grand finale. His hands are ridiculously quick, and he seems to be a master of misdirection. Some of the tricks he pulls off look impossible and cause a chorus of hasps from the crown. He owns his talent well, flaunting these skills on the stage.
There is a fair amount of crowd interaction in the show, as you would expect. He handles this well, even when some audience members, specifically a memorable turn from a man called Charles, try to foil him or catch him out through the tricks. He comically handles any seeming mistakes that he or us make. However, don’t be fooled, there are no mistakes in this show.
It is truly a wild hour of magic, and will leave you on the edge of your seat. It builds to a dramatic conclusion, where the heist is completed in absolutely spectacular fashion. This isn’t one to be missed.
