Wickedly Wonderful Blues with a dram or two
The Rhythm and Booze project bring their whisky and blues show to the Fringe. Filled with music, laughs and, of course, whisky, this is a brilliant experience that educates as much as it entertains.
The show is headed up by Felipe Schrieberg on vocals and lap steel guitar, and Paul Archibald on percussion. These two are skilled performers. They are endearing, funny and massively passionate about whisky. Schrieberg is the true front man, and keeps us hooked throughout. His knowledge of whisky and blues is amazing. Archibald backs him up well, he is as cool as they come, and is a wonderful completion to this double act. They work in perfect harmony through the show to deliver a wonderful performance.
They are talented whisky connoisseurs, who possess incredible knowledge. While one talks about the tasting notes, the other teaches us the proper way to nose the drink. What makes the show so enjoyable is that, while they embrace the pretentious side of tasting whisky, they laugh at it, and teach the audience how to sound like they know what they’re talking about without the need to know all that much at all. They give us three whiskies, the smooth Taiwanese Kavalan, a more complex Ryelaw, a rye scotch whisky and the smokey Laphroaig 15, which was a little too much for me in all honesty. Each is different, providing a wonderful mix of palettes for us to engage with.
Along with the whisky, we have the blues music. I challenge anyone not to be completely blown away by these musicians. Schrieberg has an amazing voice, and is a talented guitarist. He holds any melody or song thrown at him. Archibald is simply sensational. He possesses rhythm in every bone of his body. He plays the drums to excellence and can make sounds with a washboard that should be impossible. The music is incredible, and we are treated to a nice mix of it.
This is an amazing experience, and is a must see for any lover of whisky or music at the fringe. The Rhythm and Booze Project are making something truly amazing, and should be seen at every possible moment.
