Brilliant written show that questions the nature of language and how we look at ourselves
Maya Shoham writes and stars in In Other Words, a metatheatrical piece that examines our use of language and the gaps in the words we have, trying to find new words to plug the holes so we can explain the feelings that were unexplainable.
Shoham is an excellent performer, who holds the show throughout. She displays her sizable talent, drawing you in with her warmth and conviction in the project. It is a powerhouse performance that builds to a sad and heartbreaking conclusion. She displays excellent physicality, admirable character work and a full range of emotions in the hour. She is surprised at points with where this script takes her, and these all act to plumb further into the depths of the self.
The play is written incredibly well, and cleverly connects the strands of Shoham’s journey. It constantly challenges the restrictions of language, posing questions to bilinguality, the gaps in our language and how we don’t utilise language to its fullest. It is a truly unique and brilliant piece of theatre. Shoham uses a metatheatrical style throughout, breaking the forth wall to question her character and her script, to ultimately question herself. The consistent challenging of her own work is done well throughout, and while complex, never overcomplicates itself. It is a well balanced journey that doesn’t lose the audience by trying to do too much.
Within her grapple with language is a deeper exploration of herself, how she presents and holding a mirror to the character shown on the stage. This leads to an almost somber ending, where a character must contemplate their own existence, and where to go from this point. It is a search for purpose that can continue as this play, and Shoham’s own journey evolves.
The idea of a Fringe Hidden Gem is a bit of an overused idea. However, in this play, we have a genuine hidden gem tucked deep into the programme. It is a wonderful piece of work and worth the trip for any theatre lover.
