An Assured Piece of Improv from a Talented Group

TBC Improv arrive at the Edinburgh Fringe with a brand-new storytelling Improv show. The show relies on audience experience, asking for prompts based on big decisions affecting their lives, from which this group of improvisers create a silly world full of laughter and the occasional talking train.

The story follows the building of a new train station in a small English town. We meet various larger than life characters that entertain as we are shown snippets of a story that slowly weaves together to its conclusion. These are talented performers, who can figure out a story in seconds and roll with it. They build a world well that fully engrosses the audience, and brings ample humour with it. They are very capable at hanging threads of stories to keep on picking up through the show, completing a quite well-built narrative. For a first lurch into a longer form improv show, they work with incredible talent.

The performances from the group are brilliant. They are all clearly skilled improvisers who latch onto a strange situation and plunder it for all the laughs possible. They possess a rich and strong bond with each other that is evident, helping to build on scenes and embracing the “yes, and” philosophy that improv thrives on. There were moments where a few of the more rowdy audience members tried to insert themselves into the show, but these performers handled this very well. They never seemed distracted and utilised some of the heckles to their advantage, reaching a solid height of comedy.

This troupe normally operates in a faster paced style of improv, and the only thing that could develop this show further is if they could allow some more time for sketches at certain moments. The performers were quick to jump into scenes instead of leaving the people on stage for a couple more minutes to build the comedy further. If they find the balance in these sketches, then this show will only get funnier.

Among The Pigeons is a very fun hour of improv. There are assured performances from a likable and talented group of performers. It is not one to be missed.
