Spellbinding, Spectacular and unrelentingly fabulous
Bernie Dieter returns with her Kabarett for another year, and does not disappoint. It is a filthy, sexy, outrageous showcase of the bizarre and brilliant, fronted by a legendary performer.
The show is made up of several performers, and headed up by Dieter. She is electric every time she graces the stage. She sings with a powerful voice, and struts like she owns the place. It is an undeniably great watch. She bonds with the audience in a heartbeat and does not let us look away. Dieter keeps us engaged and encourages us to have fun, let loose and ignore the pressures from outside. It is an escape, dressed in some fabulous performances, which is absolutely wonderful. Dieter is backed up by a live band, who flow perfectly with the show. They perform a mixture of original songs and covers that always compliment the action on the stage.
This variety night features an eclectic blend of some alternative and provocative acts. Calen Cameron opens the show, providing us with exquisite tap dancing. His feet move at a thunderous pace. He is followed by a progression of wonderful acts. Iva Rosebud brings hilarious, audacious drag that is shocking and brilliant while never losing its beauty. Jacqueline Furey performs both fire breathing and sword swallowing. It is incredibly impressive, and some moments may just be a little hard to believe. Soliana Ersie provides a contortionist act that is simply mesmerising. The only explanation of her flexibility is that she is missing a few bones, or what she achieves is not at all possible. We round out the cast with Jarred Dewey, an aerialist with phenomenal skill. They glide around their performances with utter grace and skill, while always wearing heels. That, in itself, is very impressive.
While the performances take centre stage, there is a prevailing message underneath. This is a message of connection, acceptance and togetherness. As the years move on, this message, poignantly presented by Dieter, is more and more important. What Dieter creates is a space in which we can feel more together. As we watch in awe of the performers, no ones differences matter, and that really is a thing of beauty.
Bernie Dieter curates a variety show that never lets you down. It is filled with stunning acts, brilliant messages and superb music. My only hope is that this comes back to the Fringe again, for years and years to come.
