REVIEW: Abishek & Nirmal: The Reel to Real

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Charming, cheeky and quick witted – a delight of an evening

I’ll be honest – I was desperate to see this. I actually met Abishek and Nirmal during the Fringe, but couldn’t make it to their show then. Their energy and smiles made it impossible to not come to their Soho shows.

The show is a cheeky reimagining of speed dating/blind date with lots of crowd work and a couple of songs. The duo are bullets of energy, whizzing around the stage with a force of joy which is hard to ignore. Their chemistry shows the work of a duo who has spent a lot of time together and they bounce naturally between punchlines.

Why a speed dating show? The pair are making a point about arranged marriage but predominantly the concept is a vehicle to show their quick wit and interaction skills. We start with a blindfolded couple who have zero chemistry and not to be unkind but very little game. Abishek and Nirmal manage to pull every ounce of humour out of the interaction and we leave know this couple will never make it.

The second couple, despite an age gap, have a battle of wits and once again the duo shine with their interjections. I would say that occasionally the duo do interject over each other which can be a bit confusing/loud but this is an understandable problem of improv’ed shows.

Finishing the show with a ‘blind dateesque’ questioning section, we get to some of the biggest laughs of the night. The beauty of an audience interaction show is that you get an unique experience. No one else will ever see that show, and for me that always makes me feel more of a moment.

Definitely recommend!
