REVIEW: Sao Paulo Dance Company

Rating: 5 out of 5.

An explosive and dynamic dance experience that is definitely worth the watch

Coming from Brazil, Sao Paulo Dance Company presents their premiere UK and Ireland tour. Separated into three different parts, Anthem, Gnawa and Agora, all with latin influence and the technical foundations of classical ballet, the performance is an explosive and dynamic dance experience that is definitely worth the watch.

Featuring 22 dancers with impeccable technique and stage presence, the three dances are engaging and interesting and all uniquely choreographed by Goyo Montero, Nacho Duato and Cassi Abranches. The synchronisation of the collection of dancers was impressive and aesthetically pleasing and despite the simplistic costumes and minimal set there were many interesting performance elements which I absolutely loved!! One of which was when the dancers performed floor work underneath lights that were hung from the ceiling, another was in the final number where the dancers did simplistic pedestrian movements to the sound of ticking much like a clock.

The music used also complimented the choreography and at times elements of the performance felt quite dystopian and futuristic which I enjoyed. The show ends with a Post Show Q&A with the dancers and Artistic Director Ines Bogea, which is an opportunity for the audience to learn more about the company and the concepts of the performance which I think was a nice experience to include. I would love to see more from Sao Paulo Dance Company and would recommend the show to anyone especially those who are passionate about dance.
