What A Dame Changer!
If you’re in search of a raucous good time, look no further than Them is Brothers Comedy’s “A Dame of Two Halves,” a dazzling two-act comedy extravaganza brought to life by the talented MacNeill brothers, Harrison and Leo. With their unique brand of humour, they transport audiences to the whimsical world of Pantoland, where chaos and laughter reign supreme.
The show introduces us to the hilarious antics of sisters Anti Biotics and Anti Disestablishmentarianism, who find themselves embroiled in zany adventures after a mishap with King Dom’s magical bins. Act One sets the stage for a fast-paced romp through Dumfries and Galloway, complete appearances from an inept shopkeeper and an overzealous police detective. The jokes fly thick and fast—one-liners and cheeky quips that blend political satire with classic Scottish humour, leaving the audience in stitches.
The comedic timing is impeccable, and the duo’s ability to portray a multitude of characters — from the villainous baddie to the charming prince — showcases their versatility. Despite the occasional specific local reference that might flummox international attendees, the universal humour and outrageous situations ensure everyone is swept up in the laughter.
In the second act, we meet the sisters again, this time in witness protection as Anti Perspirant and Anti Climax. The plot may be as absurd as it sounds, but who cares? Pantomime is all about the wild hilarity, the silly costumes, and the catchy tunes. The MacNeill brothers deliver on all fronts, with their voices harmonizing beautifully in spontaneous musical numbers that invite the audience to join in the fun.
While the costumes may have a scruffy charm, it’s clear that more polished outfits could elevate this already brilliant show to new heights. The deliberate choice of whimsical yet ragged attire adds to the comedic effect, but a bit more attention to detail would enhance the overall experience. However, the impressive quick changes and the infectious energy of the performers more than compensate for any costume shortcomings.
Overall, “Dames in Pantoland” is a fantastic treat for anyone looking to experience the essence of pantomime at its finest. The laughter is nonstop, and the clever callbacks ensure that the momentum never wanes. With its delightful blend of silliness and charm, this show is a must-see. Following a successful debut at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2022, it is worth keeping a look out for future shows produced by Them is Brothers Comedy as they are sure to sell fast. Don’t miss the chance to revel in the hilarity.
Though this was a two night only performance at Capital Theatres, it’s safe to assume there is much more to come from this talented duo. Follow them on social media @themisbrothers to find the next chance to see them!
