Festive films for all appetites

This week, the Cameo cinema hosted its Festive Shorts Showcase, offering a delightful evening of entertainment for movie lovers in Edinburgh. The event featured a diverse selection of films, including entries from the 48 Hour Film Project Scotland and carefully curated works from local filmmakers by Screen Education Edinburgh.

As always, the Cameo proved itself a charming venue, with the warm hospitality of its staff and an array of tasty treats and drinks that added to the festive atmosphere. This long-standing Edinburgh institution truly knows how to create a welcoming and enjoyable experience for all.

The short films presented ranged from playful, campy Christmas tales to more contemplative works that delved into the complexities of the human experience. While some films may have had uneven moments in quality, there were plenty of enjoyable surprises and laughter throughout the evening.

A few highlights included *Ice Melts* by Archie Middleton, a beautifully shot piece showcasing breathtaking views of Edinburgh from Arthur’s Seat. Another standout was *16* by Rachel Flynn, which, in my view, stole the show with its exceptional acting.

Though the 48 Hour Film Project entries occasionally struggled with pacing and dialogue, the limited timeframe for creation made these challenges entirely forgivable. Ultimately, the night was a wonderful celebration of local talent and creativity, proving once again that the Cameo remains one of Edinburgh’s cosiest and most beloved cinemas. It’s certainly an event worth marking in your calendar for 2026!
