The future of inclusive foods looks bright at this UK-leading festival.


As the UK’s only festival of gluten and dairy free food, the Free From Festival marks the beginning of a series of food and drink events down at Woolwich Works over the summer — including the BBQ focused Fume Festival at the end of May and the Original Jerk Cookout in July. 

The Free From Festival embraces all things alternative, with makers finding ingenious ways to make some of our favourite dishes free of gluten, dairy, sugar, and nuts. It’s a veritable haven for any vegan or coeliac foodie, or anyone who feels their allergies might get in the way of broadening their gastronomic horizons. At the Free From Festival there’s showings from big names like Borough 22 Doughnuts and gluten free specialists Schär, masterclasses and discussions with industry experts, as well as smaller businesses selling their wares. 

The Vegan Patty Lady delivers plant-based spins on beloved Jamaican patty classics like beef or ackee and saltfish, with delicious results. Crazy Bastard Sauce has a range of flavourful hot sauces for those brave enough to try. Yau’s pack a punch with their all-natural sauces, dips, and marinades made without skimping on flavour. As for drinks, Carisips have refreshing juices inspired by the Caribbean made with an unfussy, all-natural approach. And if you’re looking for something a little harder, U:MI’s vodka-spiked iced teas are a tasty low-sugar, fizz-free option on a hot day.

Arguably one of the main attractions of the festival is the food court, there’s a little something for everyone. Highlights include an indulgent salty and sweet fried chicken and waffle from London enterprise Utter Waffle — who provide meaty, veggie,and vegan options for each dish. The moreish vanilla custard doughnut from Borough 22 is well worth the wait in line. Good F’ing Pizza lives up to its name with gooey margherita by the slice. Clearly the festival does not mess about in terms of quality, very few dishes fall into the dreaded stodginess that so many other coeliac and vegan friendly meals are guilty of. We’ve come a long way from bland nut roasts and claggy bread.
