REVIEW: Scouts! The Musical

Rating: 5 out of 5.

“A brilliant introduction to musical theatre, and a reminder why we love it in the first place”

Gigglemug Theatre, in partnership with the Scouts, have created a truly delightful musical that’s brimming with energy, charm, and spirit. Whether you’re an active Scout or someone with fond memories of tying knots and toasting marshmallows, Scouts! The Musical skilfully blends nostalgia and humour with the genuine heart of the organisation.

The story follows a lively group of Scouts at the Annual Scout Games, led for the first time by the enthusiastic Scout Leader Dylan. Along the way, we see Joe and Eliza navigate the ups and downs of friendship, Luke and Rosie discover newfound confidence, and a hypnotic villain threatens to disrupt it all. At its core, this is a story of community, resilience, and growing up – with a healthy dash of silliness and theatrical flair. It honours the values of the Scouts in a way that’s heartfelt, funny, and inclusive.

Described in the script as an “immersive musical”, Scouts! fully lives up to the claim. Audience members were invited to join in the fun on stage, and this interactive element was handled with great care and creativity. It added a sense of wonder, particularly for younger theatregoers, and you could imagine it being a magical first theatre experience for many. The production is split into a 55 minute act one and a 35 minute act two which suits the audience perfectly.

The original soundtrack is brilliant: catchy, clever, and thoughtfully composed. At times, there are knowing nods to classic musicals, suggesting that Scouts! could be the start of a lifelong love of musical theatre for some. It’s the kind of show you’ll remember fondly, and perhaps return to in years to come with a warm sense of nostalgia.

The cast are uniformly excellent. Each performer impressively takes on multiple roles as musicians throughout the entire performance. Kemi Clarke is all heart as Scout Leader Dylan, while Eleanor Fransch perfectly captures Eliza’s know-it-all charm. Burhan Kathawala brings warmth and humour as Joe, and Rob Gathercole shines in dual roles as musical director and the delightfully awkward Luke. Heather Gourdie pops up throughout as the narrator with flair, and Katie Pritchard delivers strong vocals and big laughs in equal measure. Emily Kitchingham is a particular standout – her vocal power is enchanting.

Scouts! is an uplifting, well-crafted new musical that deserves to be seen and celebrated. Having been nominated for a WhatsOnStage Award for Best Off-West End Production in 2023 – and described by Bear Grylls himself as “Incredible!” – it’s clear this show is striking a chord.

Catch it on tour this summer as it heads to London (18-22 June) and Bath (26-29 June). A thoroughly heartwarming experience for all ages – don’t miss it!
