REVIEW: Nina Conti: Who’s Face Is It Anyway

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Ventriloquism like you’ve never seen it – Nina Conti is lightning quick and outrageously funny

Every performance of Nina Conti’s Who’s Face Is It Anyway will be entirely unique to the audience afforded the pleasure of viewing it – the show is largely unscripted and relies on improvised comedy. This is a huge risk and Conti navigates it exceptionally, ensuring a laugh can be summoned from even the most uncooperative of audience volunteers. A variety of ventriloquist styles accompany her standup, which remains hilarious in its own right. Her critical monkey counterpart formed a fantastic start to the show, but the real highlight is her use of masks, transforming audience members into her very own puppets.

Conti creates a warm atmosphere where audience volunteers feel safe to offer up their qualms in her ‘therapy with a monkey’ skit, but shortly transforms their confessions into a hilarious and cheekily insulting song. With a live musician improvising a melody to Conti’s spontaneous lyrics, her ability to think on her feet comes alive. Her comedy moves with an engaging pace yet still manages to create witty callbacks and developed ‘bits’ with brand new material. She fills a huge venue with ease and brings laughter to an audience of widely spanning demographics. It is one of the more expensive shows at the fringe but certainly worth it- you are guaranteed a fantastic night of original comedy!
