REVIEW: Bubble Schmeisis (Remixed) @ Summerhall Sauna Theatre

Reading Time: 2 minutesThis year, for the first time ever, Summerhall Arts venue opened a sauna theatre. Yes, that’s right, an actual sauna. Set in Canning Town Schvitz, Nick Cassenbaum’s play Bubble Schmeisis is the perfect accompaniment to this unique venue. Not only is the literalisation of the sauna location a wonderful way to bring Cassenbaum’s words to life, but his exploration of community, naked vulnerability and the places that shape our identity are made increasingly immediate as we share the sauna experience together.

REVIEW: ROOMIES @ Underbelly

Reading Time: 2 minutesROOMIES, a one-woman testimonial exploring struggles with control, identity and mental health, is the type of show I tend to treat with a little caution. I find this category of performance often at risk of glamorizing difficult experiences, and occasionally becoming a series of confessions more helpful for the performer than for their audience. However, writer and performer Julia Stephens never falls into these traps, rather, ROOMIES strikes an excellent balance between realistic portrayal and responsible storytelling. What results is an entirely believable storyline that doesn’t shy away from hard truths, but is ultimately a moving, hopeful watch.
