A pertinent message and an aesthetic masterpiece
Relish theatre company’s Drag revolution Acid’s Reign is a defiant and heartfelt triumph. Starring familiar Drag Race faces Victoria Scone and Scarlett Harlett, alongside the indomitable Gigi Zahir, Jamie Fuxx and Ash Weir, this cast is certainly not one to miss. The show travels through a wonderful selection of original songs, performed with a live band, and each performer offers sensational vocals that would be entirely at home on any west end stage. This is a punchy, highly entertaining method of conveying the show’s urgent call to action in combating the climate crisis and the hypocrisy of mainstream media.
Harry Whitfield’s costume designs alongside a brilliant set design by Good Teeth contribute towards the visual feast this performance offers. The entire show was remarkably well conceived, with a striking visual aesthetic that flickers excitingly between runway and revolution. Acid’s Reign manages to provoke important conversation around not only climate issues but issues facing drag performers too, such as the exclusion of drag kings or the pressure to cultivate a brand in order to remain visible. Never was the writing overwhelmed with content, rather, Acid’s Reign navigates important subject matter with well judged pace and moving openheartedness.
Each character offered an interesting variation of perspectives, with beautiful performances offered from every performer, and the entire company working as a collective with exceptional synergy. This show is a riot – being a part of its audience is an absolute pleasure.
