Satirical success
Disclaimer: none of this review is influenced by the dangerously fed-up Bunny’s threat to kill any harsh reviewers in cold blood. Craig Manson has crafted a fantastic character in the bitter, ruthless and furiously ambitious Bunny. Charming and sadistic in equal measure, Manson absolutely knows how to work a room. From Bunny!’s flamboyant opening number, it is clear this show is Bunny’s world and we are simply living in it. Yet this candid, direct style offers the chance for Manson’s sharp writing to shine, as Bunny shamelessly flaunts the industry criticism’s we’ve all thought but few are brave enough to voice.
What results is a cutting, darkly ironic critique of the ‘critically acclaimed solo-show’ trope, frequently hilarious and filled with well handled metatheatre that will offer any exhausted fringe performers in the audience some catharsis. Bunny! doesn’t hold back, and at times her critiques, pushed past the edge of acceptability, would divide the room. Yet this is a sure sign of anything worth saying, and Manson’s writing knows how to handle potent thoughts with care, developing shocking imagery into brilliant revelations.
Bunny! is entirely in the spirit of what the fringe should be, and its audience is exceptionally fun to be a part of. I am excited by Manson’s creative voice and keen to hear more of his observations.
