‘Define Queerness’ is stunning from start to finish.‘
‘Define’ and ‘Queerness’: two words that do not easily sit in each other’s company. To attempt a definition of something so deeply personal, something subjective which strives for boundlessness and mutability, is surely to reduce it. Yet definitions enable self-expression which is both a power and a necessity for a community who are continually made to justify their existence. Define Queerness, a verbatim play devised and performed by Grey Baker and Charlie VanStone, captures this beautifully.
Define Queerness focuses on the testimonies of two queer couples, following their developing experiences over the course of a year. These testimonies are threaded together with personal insights from Baker and VanStone’s own insights into their relationships with queerness, offering a gorgeous moments of candidness. These two performers have an incredible connection, seamlessly moving through the performances different vignettes in a style that seems entirely natural but is incredibly detailed and must have taken significant crafting. This offers an exploratory and personal tone which is entirely appropriate for its subject matter, and is stunning to watch.
Define Queerness is wonderfully celebratory of underrepresented storylines and brings unique voices to the stage with highly accomplished characterisation. Each performance aspect helps realise a warm and open atmosphere, from Natasha Ross’ dreamy lighting design to Claire Timmins & Sydney Hayward’s cosy set. But the words themselves always remain at the forefront of the production, given space to breathe under Baker and Vanstone’s accomplished verbatim delivery. A real highlight of this show was the fusion of dialogue and original music, bringing it to a close in a truly touching manner.
I would absolutely recommend Define Queerness to anyone looking for an open conversation to explore identity, and to witness two fantastic performers shine.
