‘Imaginative, unusual and very funny’

Underground Monk Show is a wonderfully strange, playful and entertaining piece of clown theatre. From the opening moments, the show creates a distinctive atmosphere, immediately drawing the audience into its bizarre and imaginative world. There is a lovely sense of freedom throughout, with the four performers clearly embracing the opportunity to play, experiment and surprise.

A seemingly ordinary prop becomes a gateway into a series of unexpected situations and strange new worlds. The performers make excellent use of physical comedy, movement and facial expressions, often creating huge laughs without relying heavily on dialogue. Each member of the cast brings a unique personality and style to the performance, while their chemistry as an ensemble keeps the whole thing moving.

One of the show’s greatest strengths is its unpredictability. Scenes can suddenly head in completely unexpected directions, creating a wonderfully chaotic quality that feels perfectly suited to the Fringe. The comedy is often wonderfully silly and exaggerated, but there is also a real sense of precision behind the apparent randomness. Small gestures, expressions and pieces of physical business become surprisingly memorable.

The show also shifts tone effectively as it progresses. Without giving too much away, the later sections introduce a more dramatic turn before developing into an unexpected and suitably absurd conclusion. The combination of chaos, physical comedy and moments of genuine warmth gives the performance more depth than might initially be expected.

The interaction with the audience adds another enjoyable dimension, helping to create the feeling that anything could happen. It gives the performance an energetic, spontaneous quality and highlights the playful spirit running through the entire production.

Overall, Underground Monk Show is inventive, energetic and gloriously odd. It embraces silliness without losing its sense of craft, and the performers work brilliantly together to create something distinctive and memorable. With its physical comedy, eccentric characters and unpredictable storytelling, it captures much of what makes the Edinburgh Fringe so enjoyable.

A strong four-star show and well worth seeking out for anyone looking for something imaginative, unusual and very funny.
