REVIEW: The Cambridge Footlights International Tour 2024

Reading Time: 2 minutesIt takes only a few seconds for the show to start making you laugh, with the group ridiculing the prestige they’ve been given for “winning a bunch of awards 50 years ago” setting the tone for another absurdist, satirical, and unserious show, with some serious talent. Any fan of Monty Python will feel right at home, sketches are littered with absurdist punchlines, wordplay that makes you roll your eyes violently, and sight gags that make you feel like you’re going a little insane. Each of the actors has a great chemistry , selling whacky character and scenes nonchalantly.

REVIEW: The Strange Affair of Paul

Reading Time: 2 minutesThe Strange Affair of Paul is an entirely amusing affair. Callum Jones’ one-man parody show takes the overly-serious film noir style and turns it on its head. Conspiracy theories, an incredibly strange detective, and a never ending stream of metaphors and jokes; everything you need for an entertaining evening at the theatre.

REVIEW: The Book of Margery Kempe

Reading Time: 2 minutesThe Book of Margery Kempe, by writer and director Natalie Lines, takes a fresh look at a mediaeval work by the same name, which some believe to be the first known autobiography in the English language. The real Margery Kempe, according to the book she dictated in the early 1400’s, spent her life experiencing the agony and ecstasy of all-consuming religious visions. In this new student-led dramatisation of Margery’s tale, Lines explores what drives a person to document their life, as Margery seeks to defend herself against accusations of heresy and prove that she does indeed have a personal relationship with Jesus.

REVIEW: Swamplesque

Reading Time: 2 minutesThe best thing I can say is this show doesn't cut corners on either the Shrek or the burlesque parts. If you want powerful, sultry and graceful dances without Smash Mouth playing over the top, go somewhere else. If you want a comedy about Shrek without one of the characters stripping by the end of the scene, into a melodramatic and camp song - go somewhere else.
